I saw the LeBron James poster in Cleveland across from the stadium when I went to a game a few years back with Mike Rumschick, Andy Messmore, and Jeremy Fulda. It quite disturbed me.
Is it just me or does it seem that man has become more blatant in his placement of himself at the throne of God, not bowed to his knees before it, but sitting on it?
Tom, do you feel that displays such as this are outward symptoms of an issue that we all have which is our contention for supremacy over our lifes with God. I read a book by CJ Maheney about humility. I am paraphrasing here, but I seem to remember the book making a point that much of our sin is rooted in our contending for supremacy with God in all areas of our lives, rather than giving them over to Him. I think as I become more and more sanctified, I contend for less supremacy. I give over more and more of myself and self-control to God, which tends to lessen my “self-idolatry.”
I guess the poster you have tagged above is a display of the opposite happening?
I would want to phrase it that humility realizes my place in creation – I am an agent with my own will, but that will is to be conformed to the desires of God. Thus, I do not lose control to God; indeed, quite the contrary. The more I obey God, the free-er I am to truly be myself.
Humility is being who God created us to be without trying to ascend to something more (challenging his supremacy), or trying to debase ourselves to soemthing less (negative narcissism). It is contenment with who we were created to be, and sees ultimate freedom in that.
Okay…now I think I’m rambling. Did any of that make sense?
